I'm giving KLuJe a shot. The main issue I am having at the moment is the fact that most LJ clients do not have WSYWIG. I do not wish to insert HTML coding everytime I want to update my LJ. That is silly. Hopefully, there will be a WSYWIG editor out there soon.

Do you hate pennies?  I know there's plenty out there who probably do.  I mean, you can't put them in vending machines for soda for starters.  They get bulky in the pocket.  They're worth one measly cent (face value, but... still...).  I mean, it can't mean much, right?  Well, now's your chance to get rid of 'em!

Every day starting today, I'll bring a plastic cup with me to class.  For people who hate pennies, they have a place to throw them away.  Woo hoo!  "What?  Where are those pennies going?" one might ask.  Well, fear not.  They'll be put towards a good cause, besides melting them down and reselling the metal for higher profit.  (U.S. Mint won't take kindly to that one, so..... don't try it please.......  they'll likely retaliate against you if you do).

There's this site right here.  They do lots of things, such as install Linux-based operating systems onto other peoples' computers for a nominal fee (with support services included), promote Free and Open Source Software, and most importantly, they put together computers for the kids of Austin, Texas.  Most of the kids there have to do assignments on a computer, and those who don't have a computer have to get alternative lessons/assignments.  Talk about embarrassment.  I mean, geeze!  So I'll begin today, and on November 6, I'll deposit all the pennies into my account, and donate them to the Lobby4Linux guys.

Other than that, this week is full of tests, reading, reading, more reading, writing, and oh so much more!  Yay!

Check these guys out.  They're awesome.  They fix up old computers, and donate them to the needy.  How cool is that?  They've also been featured on CNN.  How awesome is that?  So.... go on over and check 'em out, and if you can, maybe drop a buck or two their way....

No classes and no work.  I'm really looking forward to the rest of the day, even though I slept for most of it.  For now let me describe the system I am using for work-related and school-related tasks.

I have a PowerBook G4 system.  It's got the following specs:

  • 500 MHz G4 CPU
  • 256 MB SDRAM
  • 20 GB IDE ATA Hard Drive
  • DVD-ROM
  • USB and FireWire
  • Modem/Ethernet
  • OS X Tiger
It's a wonderful system, but rest assured, I'm running stuff that I don't have to pay for and the mass majority of the stuff has the source code available.  So let's check it out:

  • Firefox: Great web browser.
  • Thunderbird: My e-mail client of choice.
  • KompoZer: My web page editor of choice.  A great replacement for Microsoft's Frontpage and Apple's iWeb.
  • Proteus: My IM client of choice.  I can connect to Yahoo, AIM, and more.
  • NeoOffice: OpenOffice.org adapted to support the Aqua interface for OS X.
  • GIMP: Runs on the system via X11 for OS X.  If anyone can find a port that supports Aqua completely, let me know.  ;)
  • Audacity: Audio editor that's pretty decent.
Of course, I have iTunes, because it's one that I find useful.  I may add VLC to it later.  I am amazed at this system's capabilities.  It's about 7 years old, and it's still kicking.  That won't mean I'll buy another iPod though.  I have iTunes subscribed to the Alex Jones podcast (which is really a re-broadcast of his show).  Why?  He's entertaining, and I don't have to pay for it.

So what am I going to do today?  Dunno yet?  So little time.  I may go head to Wal-Mart today.  Maybe not.  I'm still trying to decide.  lol

I've got some work to do today, so.......  I'll holler at ya's laterz.

Okay, I'm experimenting with Journalert, and it's pretty good so far, but it's too spartan for my liking. I wish it had a formatting toolbar. I'll make an attempt to try other OS X-based apps. Yup, I have a PowerBook G4 now.... Got it for a decent price........

Well, see you tomorrow.

I'm now the new treasurer of the anime club at UCM.  How cool is that?  Oh, and the new president, Kat, is awesome.  Not only does the club have a sponsor, but a shiny new bank account as well.  Yay!  Now I won't have to worry about carrying that cash with me all the time, keeping it safe.  Phew!

Oh, and to let people know, this will have more of the personal stuff about me.  For Unix and Oerlooked Pop Culture, read this blog instead.  ;)

Later everyone.

Well, I figured I'd give everyone an update about what's been going on in my life.  I have moved in with Dan, so things should be going great.

So here's a few photos showing what it's like...

Tons of Books: He likes to read.

There are tons of books in the first photo.  Dan likes to read, and has a variety in his collection.  That was one of the first things that shocked me upon entering his domain.  I couldn't believe the number of books he had as one person and only one person.  Also, he has some great study habits, which means one thing: he's gonna be a professor who will fulfill his dream of causing one student's head to explode per semester.

Dan's Bed: It turns into a couch instantly!

This is where Dan sleeps: in the living room.  The coolest thing is that his bed can be turned into a couch that's really great to sit in.  Unlike other "convertables," this one is actually comfortable to sit on and lay in.

Dan's Computer: AMD BADNESS!

Here's Dan's computer.  It has about 1 Terabyte of storage space.  I think all his drives are SATA, meaning one thing: blazingly fast disk performance.  He has a CPU that should be more capable than an Athlon XP 1900+ in my opinion (before changing the bus settings, it read in WinXP as a 1 GHz Athlon... as in old school... yeah, ouch!).  With a gig of RAM, decent onboard audio (NVIDIA), an ATI Radeon 9600 (128 MB of Video RAM), DVD-ROM, CD burner, and laser printer from Brother, his needs are met, and then some.  He's got a really nice monitor too, and his speakers aren't too shabby.

My Computer: Microsoft Software? Ahahahahahahahaha!

There's my computer in all its glory.  I sleep in the room in which Dan's computer used to reside.  He and Tom took a spool of LAN cable, cut it, and crimped it.  Dan had to give the crimping another go several days later so it would work properly.  That cable connects his computer to the other room, where the DSL modem currently is at.  My computer's specs are as follows:
  • 3.2 Ghz Celeron D Processor (not too shabby actually)
  • Biostar GeForce 7300 LE PCI Express (x16) Video Card: It has 128 MB of it's own RAM.  With turbocache, it's video memory configuration is 512 MB, due to the next spec...
  • 2 GB DDR RAM from Crucial.
  • 9-in-1 media card reader: I used that to grab pictures from my new 2 GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo using digiKam, photo software written for KDE (I'll explain that in a minute).
  • 80 GB Hard Drive (IDE): It runs the third test release of PCLinuxOS 2007 on it.  So far, things are looking good.  :)
  • Liteon DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
  • USB 2.0 Ports galore!
  • Sound Blaster Audigy 4: Oh yeah!  Combine that with CyberAcoustics stereo speakers (with mini sub-woofer), and you've got a decent audio system!
I run PCLinuxOS on this computer, which works well.  It's an eMachine, but it surprises me to this day.  PCLOS has picked up my Sony Cybershot digital camera and my HP Photosmart C3135 printer/scanner/copier.  I was quite shocked and pleased.  Heck, I used digiKam to download pictures from my Sony memory stick.  It was great.  I highly recommend PCLOS for those who want to ditch Windows due to Vista (as in Hasta La Vista baby!...).

In a few hours, I'm going to go see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit.  I won't be able to take pictures of the scrolls themselves (for obvious reasons, but I will be able to take pictures of Union Station and some of the people I hang out with.  I'll keep you guys posted.  :D
